Bike maintenance and parts from Santa
January 5, 2014
We managed to get a duffle bag and 2 carry on bags on the cruise ship containing only bike parts that we had shipped to Miami and our cameras. They said there was no rule against bike parts that they could find. We had packed our bag for the cruise and left it in Vancouver for Mark and Barbara to bring, so we would have no luggage for the return trip to Santiago except the parts. We were a bit worried that the airplane security and Chile customs could be a bit of a problem. At the airport in Miami they seemed a bit confused, but let us thru with very little issue. After another all night flight we arrived in Santiago at 715 am. We had been warned by our friend Clive that unlike land crossings, when you enter by Air into Chile you must pay a 132$ reciprocity fee. They x-ray your bags here and of course pulled our bags aside. They were actually very nice and after we explained that we were fixing the bikes and all the parts were leaving the country they let us thru. We took a taxi to drop off our Christmas gifts from Santa to Ruben at Johnny Motos and then another taxi ride to BMW to get the bikes for a total of ouch 70$. We finally arrived back at the shop very tired at 1030.
Ruben’s shop is very clean and organized. He is a very efficient, competent, and careful mechanic. We have 4 riding friends who have had work here and we were very happy with the job he did for us.
He managed all the work in 2 days and let Daniel use his shop and tools to do the work he needed to do.
